i use the Nikon software. i always felt that it worked well enough that it
wasn't worth switching software. it has an oversampling setting for up to
16x. i decided on 4x based on how long i was willing to wait for a single
scan to complete. this setting affects only the scan time and not the fixed
scan head movement time, which accounts for about 25% of the time needed to
scan a slide when i use 4X. this time is what i felt a reasonable tradeoff
between reduced shadow noise and scan time. it's not really that apparent
anyway except on slides with significant amounts of shadows that have almost
lost all detail.

what Scan software do you use with multipass capability? Vuescan or does
that work with the supplied Nikon Software?
Did you do some testing on the number of passes and did you get the best
results with 4 times multipass or do you make some compromises because of
the scan times?
