Hi Dave
I would do the following now:

1. Scan your drives for errors:
Start --> run --> chkdsk c: /f  (for your first drive/partition, chkdsk d:
/f for the second etc.)
say "y" yes to do the Check after the next restart

2. Check your Windows system files with Start --> run --> sfc /scannow
have your Windows XP disk ready

3. Look for the File "wpa.dbl" in the windows system32 directory and **safe
it now**. It contains your
Xp activation hardware details.

This step is recommended for everybody using Windows XP!!!

4. Download the program "xp-antispy.exe", it's free and there you can,
beside other useful settings,
set the XP activation to be done. Usually not recommended at all.

5. If that does all not help, I would do a repair installation of Windows
XP.

I assume, that you use a current antivirus program and already did a virus
scan on the system, maybe with an additional scanner like the free "Stinger"
?

greetings
Markus
