Hi Dave ... It's nice to know some of the B&W you see here has gotten you to think about doing some yourself.
I'm using a Nikon Coolscan V ED, although, had I to do it over again, I'd have popped for a few extra bucks and purchased the Super Coolscan 5000. Well, it's more than a "few" extra dollars - it's twice the price here. On the one hand it doesn't make a lot of sense to pay that much more for what is arguably only a small improvement in possible quality, but there are times (not many, admitedly) when the extra bit depth (true 16-bit v 14-bit) and potentially greater dynamic range, and the ability to do multi-pass scanning, would have been welcome. Also, the Super Coolscan will take a film feeder that allows automatic scanning of an entire roll of film, while the Coolscan V has to make due with strips of six negs as its max. This particular shot was scanned from Kodak 400 Chromogenic film. It's not bad, and better than the results I've gotten from the Ilford C41 B&W, which I absolutely hate for its tonality. I think my absolute favorite films are Tri-X pr Plus-X, with a dislike for the T-Max and Ilford Delta films. The older style emulsions just seem to offer greater depth and tonality for my taste. And while I've done it for the sake of expediency, converting color to B&W through Photoshop just isn't quite the same thing as using a conventional B&W film. Anyway, grab that film camera and get down to the local camera shop, grab some film and some developer (Ilford ID-11 is my choice for the most part), and go to it.
