Well, with the *ist (35mm film camera), I just don't think you'll be 100% satisfied when you mount a DA lens on the front. Go a little larger and you can use a 50mm f/1.4, or a 35mm f/2 (if you can find one). Both of those come in FA versions, at focal lengths that are not too far off from 40mm. ...or you could buy my ZX-5n, which *will* work with M lenses. ;)

I don't own an *ist-D, but I do have an *ist-DS, and I know that
despite the "crippled" mount, the *ist-DS will work with non-A (non auto aperture) lenses. This gets discussed here about once or twice a
week.

Thanks for the info, David, but I guess I should have been clearer: I
shoot with the *ist 35mm film camera. I love it, but it does not have
the same workarounds as its digital cousins. I have to have an "A"
setting on the aperture ring. There is a custom function that at least
allows operation, but only at full aperture, making it rather pointless
to mess with older lenses.

Besides, I really do not need any more steenking lenses. Really!
