I think you're painting a generalization with too broad a brush.  There are
several photogs that I know personally using entry level digital cameras -
Nikon D70, the Canon Rebel thing, Pentax istDS, and even some prosumer
models, that wanted and purchased PS CS for some of its features.  I
suppose that many people wouldn't spend as much for their editing software
as they did for their camera, but clearly quite a few would and will.  Over
on the PS User-to-User forum that situation is seen quite frequently.

As for the wheels on cars analogy, speaking only for California, there are
many, many people spending a lot of money for wheels and tires, often more
for them than they paid for their used cars.  Come on out and we'll cruise
through the Mission District of San Francisco, drive down to San Jose and
environs, head down to LA ...you'll see lots of old Honda Civics with VERY
expensive wheels and tires.  Of course, you probably meant the average
family guy or single mother with two kids, not young men who are into
"pimping their ride."
