Hi Cotman ... I think you're painting a generalization with too broad a brush. There are several photogs that I know personally using entry level digital cameras - Nikon D70, the Canon Rebel thing, Pentax istDS, and even some prosumer models, that wanted and purchased PS CS for some of its features. I suppose that many people wouldn't spend as much for their editing software as they did for their camera, but clearly quite a few would and will. Over on the PS User-to-User forum that situation is seen quite frequently.
As for the wheels on cars analogy, speaking only for California, there are many, many people spending a lot of money for wheels and tires, often more for them than they paid for their used cars. Come on out and we'll cruise through the Mission District of San Francisco, drive down to San Jose and environs, head down to LA ...you'll see lots of old Honda Civics with VERY expensive wheels and tires. Of course, you probably meant the average family guy or single mother with two kids, not young men who are into "pimping their ride."
