I wonder how much of that could be attributed to people always
wanting to experience the unfamiliar?

When I moved to the USA some quarter of a century ago I was
struck by just how many people in the USA seemed to cherish
import vehicles that were regarded with derision in the UK
(examples would be the Austin 1100 or the Triumph Spitfire),
while back in the UK just about any American import with a
big V8 was viewed in the sameregard.

(OK - so I now drive an American Pony Car with a big V8.
But at least I waited for a model that could corner at
reasonable speeds without the rear end hopping around)
