My daughter is forever grateful to have moved from a *ist to MX. She won't use the *ist anymore and has learned much about metering, F stops, shutter speeds, composing, focusing, etc. The automated camera was a crutch that she used because it was there. Now she doesn't really want to go back.
Good for her. I recall ranting a few years back about the futility of learning photography on automatic cameras for just the reasons you gave.
Now, wean her off zoom lenses as well.
