I like to recommend the National Geographic Photography Field Guide (by Peter Burian and Robert Caputo, or maybe the other way around)
It covers the basics AND has great photos in there to look at AND is an interesting read, besides.
Found in large chain bookstores, second-hand bookstores and online at Amazon or, for that matter, the National Geographic website.
