You don't have to tell me what the point of the article was, I knew that when I saw who published it. I don't buy it. It's not genetics alone that defines a genus. PETA has a political agenda. Taking their article as proof of anything is like taking the ravings of the Nazis as proof that Jews Slavs and Gypsies are sub human. Oops, I just invoked the Nazi's I guess I lose. Then again I didn't call anyone a Nazi so maybe I didn't.

The point being made in the article is that humans are more closely related
to chimps than chimps are to gorillas and other apes. This means that the
distinction between apes and humans is difficult to justify on rational
grounds. Many animals which are not as closely related as chimps and humans
are classified in the same genus. Applying the same taxonomic rules to
humans and chimps should place us all in the same genus, and possibly also
put gorillas in there. Given the rules of precedence the genus to which they
should all be assigned is Homo.

Chimps share something like 95+% of their DNA with humans. Then again humans share 65% or thereabouts of their genetic material with oak trees...

There is a succinct description of the genetic similarities here:

which I think is extracted from the book.

Is it now? A chimpanzee could get a decent photo out of
14,000 shots.
BTW, has anyone heard of DNA showing that humands are a
sub-species of
Chimp? Came across it in a SF story and wonder if there was
any truth
to it or did the author make it up.
Claim was that there is much more variation in chimp's DNA than human's, and that human DNA only varied by about three
strands from
the chimp's.
