I would think it is an British variant of lens. They often have a silent e at
the end of words, not having had Noah Webster to tell them how to spell. How
many know that before he published his spelling book in 1783 English spelling
was not standardized?

A few years ago I was arguing with someone as to whether there was such
a word as LENSE.
I consulted ten dictionaries, including the latest (at the time)
Webster, and none of them listed it.
