Lump hammer? Is that what we call a sledgehammer over here, from the "get a bigger
hammer" school of auto mechanics?

Why Eleanour, there are indeed a few more strings to your bow than meets
the eye.

I used to have a lovely little cartoon that I cut out of a British
magazine years and years ago (early 80s) and it hung above my desk for
years after that - it's long since disappeared. It was a very simple line
drawing of a bloke sat on the ground next to a jacked up vehicle (it was
a Haflinger I think) and the wheel and tyre are off, laying on the ground
next to him. He's sat slumped, holding a spanner (wrench) staring at the
hub assembly, with a simple line underneath:

'Look here: I am a talented and resourceful mechanic, and you are simply
a hub nut. Now are you going to come off, or am I going to have to take
the lump hammer to you?'

LOL

Sums up home auto repair beautifully ;-)

Cheers,
  Cotty
