where i grew up, it was negative only to the extent that it was something
that didn't do what it claimed. anything beyond that was something i never
heard of until i moved to the States.

slang as a teenager, which I did, and that is when I remember starting

that particular word, one is out to shock. One doesn't care, one wants to
offend the "old folks."
