The King James version of the Bible was written long before English spelling
was standardized. However was one of the major sources used in standardizing
English. Oh well!

I had never heard of it (and had been taught otherwise) but you are
right.
Not many words are the same in singular and plural form, without
options.
Species is one, sheep is another. Too late in the night to think of
yet another :-)
