To pick you up on your first two examples of the different spellings of words. In these parts they are not just spelling variations, those words have vastly different meanings. If I were to read the sentence "I need to cheque the tires on my car", I think "what the..." cheque: What I hope to get from the tax man check: What you should do to make sure your camera isn't set to ISO 3200 when shooting macro tire: what happens to some people in the Pentax v's Canon upgrade path threads tyre: round black rubber thingies on your car/bike/truck(lorry) Honestly though, I don't care how other parts of the English speaking world spell things. What does get up my nose is when I'm using a piece of software that has a spell checker and it tells me I'm spelling "centre" , "colour" or various other words wrong.
