according to their annual reports, Canon made 15.8% profit margin on their digital camera division, the highest in the industry, while Nikon made a little over 5%, even after having a dismal year with digital compact cameras. i believe Sony also made money. Kodak may or may not have made money, but they are close to the break even point. most other camera manufacturer's lost money and are expected to lose even more money in the next couple of years. Pentax is one of the companies many financial analysts expect to withdraw completely from the digital camera market since they will continue to lose money. the analysts that have published research predict that the top 4 or 5 makers by volume are going to grow their market share and everyone else will leave. Pentax is barely even in the top 10.

Pentax's official revenue forecasts show that it will make money over the
next three years, but the imaging products division will lose about the same amount of money in the next three years as they lost this year. sounds like
a winning strategy to me. then you have the financial analysts who don't
believe Pentax and think they won't even make those targets because it's
playing at the wrong end of the profit margin curve.

Are there any companies that actually make money on digital cameras? According to Olympus they don't exist...
