With the 20D when you are in full manual mode the rear dial does aperture
and the front shutter.  in Av the front does aperture and the rear dial does
exposure compensation.  in Tv the front does shutter and the rear is
exposure compensation.  At least that's how i have mine setup.  It works
well, but still sometimes when I'm in Av I accidentally turn the rear dial.
but I usually realize my mistake when i don't see the aperture value change.

All new systems - whether it's going from an LX-like interface to a *ist D,
or changing brands -  take some getting used to.  After 20 years of aperture
rings and shutter dials, using the wheelie thingies is requiring me to
re-train my fingers.... :-)
