The Canadian model seems to differ somewhat, in that it protects the
rights of society, often at the expense of individual rights and freedoms.
A democracy!

Seriously, I cherish the freedoms guaranteed by the US Constitution as
much as anyone (and more than most) but I believe the border guys had
probable cause to detain the guy and call Canadian authorities. Blood on
a chainsaw should be reasonable grounds for further investigation.
