I think you are right, Don. I've just noticed that the rear lens cap says RK on it, and not PK. Also, when taking the lens off the camera there is just a slight hesitation as the pin you mentioned passes the AF coupler.

As for the A/P setting, according to Mark's site, which JCO pointed me to, the lens was made in either 75 or 85. If the former, there was no such thing as shutter priority on Pentax (or, presumably, Ricoh) cameras. How do I find out which decade it was made?

Sounds like you got the Ricoh version.
Look at the mount, the Ricoh has just one pin which
is active when set to "P".
If it has the "A" contacts *AND* an extra pin it is
the "KA/R" meant for Pentax and Ricoh both.
CAUTION: The "P" pin likes to get stuck in the
autofocus coupler on Pentax cameras, making it a
bear to remove the lens.
Filing the "P" pin off solves this problem.

Subject: Vivitar S1 70-210 F2.8-4 question

On a whim, I bid on one of these on Ebay, and won. I already have an F
70-210, so it was somewhat unnecessary, but I wanted to see whether the
VS1 lenses are as wonderful as they are claimed to be.

The lens was described as being in "mint condition", and, guess what, it
was.

However, this lens has a P setting on the aperture ring where you would
expect to find an A on a Pentax lens. The booklet says the lens
provides
shutter-priority automation, but only refers to Canon, Olympus
and Konica
cameras.

Am I to understand that the P setting doesn't work with Pentax cameras,
but that the P was left in place to avoid having to change more
than just
the mount when manufacturing the Pentax K version of the lens?

Apart from this, the lens seems to work beautifully. It has a
very light
one-touch zoom and focus ring, but there is no creep when the
lens is held
vertically.
