One of the secrets might be that many of the pictures with droplets reflect what appear to be identical unnatural light sources, i.e. soft box or something similar. That would help punch up alot of the colors/contrast and give a more diffuse look.

In my natu^H^H^H^Hgarden shots, I avoid flash as much as possible. Charles I think lights from the back as well, and the results are, well, no word in the dictionary...

Second, many of the backgrounds are apparently artificial backing as well, helping define the foreground image.

While I don't know what Charles is doing with lighting, I have now the inclination to invest in some interesting-colour cloth; my dark blue tracksuit is getting long on the tooth :-) Not only does it define the image, it also makes for colourful results. Of course Charles' colour combinations are great.

The other thing I found interesting is his ability (again eye) to produce abstracts, almost plastic images[1] from living things.

I am still taken aback.

In effect, many of these pics appear to have benefitted by some type of portable "field studio".

Aye, give me his tools and I will...

...still come up with unfulfilling pictures.
