I have a lot of experience in test and measurement and I know what people can 
and can't do. I know that using a person as the feedback device in a 
calibration procedure where absolute values are required is generally very 
limiting compared to using a calibrated measuring device which is specific to 
the task. Gamma curves can be produced using relative measurement, this type of 
calibration is possible using visual tools I agree but colour calibration isn't 
limited to gamma correction.
