I have a lot of experience in test and measurement and I know what people can and can't do. I know that using a person as the feedback device in a calibration procedure where absolute values are required is generally very limiting compared to using a calibrated measuring device which is specific to the task. Gamma curves can be produced using relative measurement, this type of calibration is possible using visual tools I agree but colour calibration isn't limited to gamma correction.
