I heard it is quite deceiving and very soft at 18mm.
I had the 18-35 for a while, it came with my istD.
I let it go, because I don't like zooms on general principles.
I didn't notice any real issues with softness on the istD, but wheh used on
a film camera, the corners were soft. I don't think it was really optimized
for film use though, and it was purely accidental that the image circle was
large enough to cover the film frame, albeit badly.
