I think the external one does react to the pop-up one.
Something like a small fire to begin and another one to stop.

What I'm sure of is that you can choose between a couple channels so
your flash does not fires if the guy next to you uses a similar setup.

However, be advised that the Sigma one doesn't work with the D popup
(nor the DS which doesn't even suport this feature). But if you have a
Sigma on the camera and the Sigma handheld, it'll work alright.

The 360FGZ has the advantage that it can play nicely with the pop-up flash.
