No way. That lens will leave my posession when you pry it from
my cold, dead fingers. But it's a big beast, and trying to lug
it around airports is more trouble than it is worth. Maybe I'll
get a Pelican case that can hold it, plus the rest of my gear.
But at present I can (just) get everything else into carry-on.
Perhaps I'm paranoid, but I'm not comfortable letting airport
baggage handlers throw my expensive glass around. Sure, it's
insured. But that's not going to help me fast enough.

Rest assured, by the way, that if ever I *did* decide to part
with the beast the PDML would be the first to know about it.
But my brief foray into job-hunting doesn't mean I was put into
tight financial straits. Quite the opposite, in fact; I got a
fairly good layoff package from Silicon Graphics, so for a little
while I'm collecting two paychecks. At this point I'm seriously
considering putting the money aside so I can grab the MZ-D when
it comes out, which is something I'd previously rejected as
impractical, no matter how desirable digital is becoming nowadays
(especially when doing news coverage for a website). For the
moment, though, I'll just have to be satisfied with the Canon G1
my wife has picked up to replace her 35mm point-and-shoot.
(I guess buying an MZ-S and a G1 while I was still technically
unemployed should qualify me for some kind of chutzpah award)

My new employer is prepared to schedule leave for my planned
European trip (six weeks in August/September). That's another
trip where I won't be taking the 250-600. But I'm beginning to
think that a 1GB microdrive for the G1 would be a good idea.
