Well, I thought the Vivitar 2800 was new enough but it measures 135vdc across
the sync terminals. I have lots of flash, all old, 2ea Norman 200B, 3ea
Vivitar, the 2800 already mentioned, an old pocket sized 252, and a 283 with a
metal foot.
I checked B&H for one of those Wein Safe-Sync gizmos that isolate the camera
from the flash. The go for $50. Hey, I can by a new flash for not much more than
that.
Then last night I had an "Eureka!" experience. Slave flash!
I usually think of slave flash as a remote flash, but does it have to be? I put
the 283 on my flash bracket, plugged the slave unit into it, added the little
Oly digicam, set the digi for no preflash, and tried it out.
Works fine. No actual electrical connection to the camera, lots of light. I can
use f/8 in the living room. F/8 gives a DOF of about 2' to infinity at the 7mm
focal length so I can shut off the AF too. I guess it would probably not work
outdoors (nothing to reflect the cameras flash back to the slave), and it is
sure a clumsy affair as the 283 and bracket must weight 3-4 times what the
little digi camera does. But it is safe, it is many times as powerful as the in
camera flash, and it cost me nothing out of pocket.
