Slave triggers with external flash units work well as long as the  
camera's built-in flash is not using a pre-flash for red eye  
reduction or flash metering, which is the case with many digital  
cameras. Contax used to sell a flash bracket with a built-in slave  
trigger to use with their line of 35mm point and shoot cameras which  
did not have hot shoe or PC flash connection.

Sounds like the Oly 5050 does not use a preflash, or at least it's a  
mode you haven't turned on yet.
