Just put the camera in M mode

With the DS, putting the camera into M mode, with any lens set to the A position on the aperture ring, engages the P-TTL flash metering system with the built-in flash: same as in any other mode. The flash duration is adjusted to compensate for different aperture settings. Does the D operate differently?
