So, here's the question: Does auto focus need some contrasty item on which to focus. If, for example there were two solid colored objects one behind the other, and I wanted to focus on just one of them, say the closer of the two, would the focus work properly? I'd like to try out the lens while the
camera is still available to me.
...
Oh, does the auto focus work in low light, say at dusk, or at night?

It depends very much on the camera itself and on the specific kind of subject in the viewfinder, the light levels, etc. Overall, AF can lock in pretty easily on *most* things and has trouble with *some*, and it depends what the situation + body + lens is for particular behaviors.

Of course, if it fails to lock in consistently under poor light or on the subject matter you want to photograph with the body you're getting, flip the switch and focus manually.
