Subject: Re: Sigma 500mm f7.2 MF
Everything seems OK - apart from the fact that the widest f-stop reported
by
the camera is f-8 Is it possible to get the maximum aperture value of
f-7.2, and if not, why not?
The lens is, to the best of my knowledge, in excellent working order, and
the camera correctly reports f-stops using other lenses - so is the
maximum
f-8 when using the sigma 500 f-7.2 a quirk, or a fault?
<hunch>
I know nothing about the equipment in question, but is it possible that
the
body is simply incapable of ~displaying~ f/7.2, so it opts for f/8
instead?

Thanks for the reply Fred. Yes, that's the answer I just received from
rec.photo.digital, it seems that it can display f-7.1 or f-8.0 - so it
defaults to the latter.
Simple enough - except for people like me who don't understand these things
(yet)
I've never owned a film slr - are they capable of reading f-7.1? - I ask
because the sigma was clearly designed for film use, so presumably an slr
would be able to read its aperture correctly?
One other query - the helpful poster on rec.photo.digital suggested
that, although the camera was obliged to report the f-stop as 8, the actual
metering would still be based on a value of 7.1. Do you know if this is
correct?
Thanks
