I use flash for this kind of work, but I find TTL metering mandatory, so
it won't be an option if you're using the MX. What I do is set the
camera for manual exposure, choosing an aperture and shutter speed
combination for the brightest the light gets (or the slowest shutter
speed I can hand hold). Then the TTL flash metering fills in whatever
else is necessary (if any). I've had great success with this technique:
It compensates for the variations in lighting, fills in the shadows a
bit and doesn't look unnatural. In other words, it doesn't look is if
you've used flash most of the time :)
