This is very true in "pre-DSLR" era, and I am sure they knew it.  But I
believe they are changing after the DSLR became reachable to average
consumer, although they are still much slower than the other big brothers.

I thought I posted not too long ago that Pentax said they would release
higher end DSLR one after another either from this fall or from the
beginning of next year.  In fact, I purchased an *istDs only a week ago but
in my mind, it was a stop gap until Pentax come up with the "upgrades", and
this time, I do believe they will indeed start feeding the mid to upper end
market.  But I still won't buy 20D or RebelXT with their associated lenses
:-). I much prefer the Ds and compact yet excellent lenses.
