they've made that body. it's called the *istD. now they promise that there will be a higher end body to replace it. once it is ready, then they can start cutting features again.

That doesn't seem to be how it works to me. You make one body, then cut off a number of "features" to provide cheaper models, thereby getting three or so sets of sales for one level of R&D. You _might_ pick up some lens sales but many of the SLR buyers will already have lenses, even the budget level ones.
