why now? because there is every danger that Pentax will have to exit the camera business entirely. i think Olympus, Fuji, and Konica Minolta face the same issues. Pentax camera shipments placed it 9th largest in terms of unit shipments among Japanese companies last year, and like the other three i named, hasn't made money from their camera divisions in a while. ten years ago, the big 5 also were the top 5 in sales. now only 2 of the big 5 are. the rules have changed entirely.

Apart from the fact their core market and Pentax enthusiast aren't necessarily the same, I agree. What I can't understand, however, is why this criticism comes now in 2005 (I whined about the same thing 10 years ago. Now I'm optimistic now that Pentax claims to make SLR's their main focus - If I have waited 20 years I can certainly wait two more). Pentax dumped their core market 15-20 years ago (depending on how you count).
