I've just read the istds manual and don't understand the following:

on page 93 it says that P-TTL is possible with an A lens, however
on page 144 it says it doesn't. I think the same applies to the
istd manual.
Is the manual right?

The manual is incorrect where it says it doesn't. The *ist DS
supports P-TTL flash metering with all A and later series lenses (A,
F, FA, DA, D-FA).

Where the D and DS bodies differ is in their support with M/K-bayonet
lenses. The D will support TTL flash metering with them, the DS goes
to full power flash output only (with the built-in flash) and
provides a Guide Number chart for setting the lens aperture based on
subject distance. The DS supports TTL flash metering with these

Why have they done this 'feature', all former bodies even simple ones do TTL with M/K lenses don't they? Does the DS also do full flash output with A/F/FA lens with its diaphragm off the A setting?

lenses only when you use a Pentax-dedicated external flash unit.
