Hi Gang ... Thanks for all the advice and suggestions. It turns out that whatever the problem is, it's in the monitor itself. I swapped the monitor from my old machine (which is essentially the same monitor except it doesn't have a flat screen) and it works great. The monitor now needs to be calibrated, and that'll take a few days until I get the calibration gear back. Meanwhile, Adobe Gamma will have to do.
Now there's time to look around for a better monitor ... Shel
