My best suggestion is to refer you to Bruce Fraser's article "Out of Gamut:
(Almost) Everything You Wanted to Know about Sharpening in Photoshop but
Were Afraid to Ask" at http://www.creativepro.com/story/feature/11242.html

The setting depends on the picture and on your intended output, print or
web.

Subject: Unsharp Mask

| Hi,
|
| I have scanning some slides at work and then sharpening them to correct. I
| know most people use unsharp mask as opposed to sharpen. Why is that? and
| what setting do you use most of the time?
|
| Thanks,
| Paul Jones
