I'm using a Kirk King Cobra gimbal head with their quick release system
(what I had @ GFM) on my 600mm FA. The lens plate is longer than the lens
tripod foot, so I can rebalance when I add a teleconvertor or change
bodies.
Obviously, you can use any of the previously suggested heads but if you have
any thoughts about capturing (moving) wildlife, a gimbal head is one of the
better options. The idea with a gimbal head is to balance the camera/lens
combo at the head's vertical pivot point so the combo becomes weightless as
far as vertical motion is concerned. I've never tried a video head, but I
have no issues with my King Cobra. It's about the same cost as the Wimberley
but I chose it because of it's simplicity. YMMV

Tom was close about me having a head to sell @ GFM - but it was my old
tripod I was trying to sell. I still have it - a Gitzo 1410 aluminum tripod
that I used with my 600 before I popped for the 1548 Gitzo carbon fiber
tripod.
