There's a LOT of logging done in our National Forests, i.e., on Gummint Land. I used to be peripherally involved in the timber business, and saw first hand what logging practices were here in the Western part of the US. Been away from from it for quite a few years, but I don't think things have changed all that much wrt timbering on public land.
Of course, there's lots of privately owned timber land as well, but even the companies that have their own land often log on Gummint land.
