I'd agree... AF systems are very slow in low light no matter how fast your lens is. You could use a suitable flash that projects a spot- beam (eg AF-500FTZ) but I'm not sure if you can do this without actually triggering the flash when you press the button. Plus it's big and needs batteries.

I think that if you're having trouble with zone focus using a 50mm f/ 2, that will be more due to the focal length and resultant DOF than the lens speed. If anything, a faster lens will make your problems worse because you'll be tempted to shoot wider for either a faster shutter speed or a lower ISO.

Would you consider trying a fast 35mm lens as a compromise?
