Hello
Yesterday I spotted the above lens for sale at 70. Optically and
cosmetically good but two mechanical problems. With the lens off-camera the
aperture would not consistently open to 1.8, stopping at the half-stop
between 1.8 and 2.8. Sometimes it worked just fine. The other problem was
that between 1.3m and 1.2m on the focusing scale there was a noticeable
knock in the mechanism.

It's no collector lens but my questions are:

how does the lens perform?
should I buy? I have never seen one for sale anywhere else so have no
reference for pricing.

Would appreciate any comments.

Thanks in advance
Jim Brooks

I also recently acquired a smc k85/1.8.
I sent mine to a local camera shop (repair) that I have confidence in. I
have used it for about 3 weeks. To say it is tack sharp is an UNDER
statement. I have been shooting a lot hand held, 1/250-1/500 sec @ F2. The
results are superb (at least for my results).

I also found my lens at a very decent price...then I checked around to find
what a reasonble price should have been. In the US it would appear that the
lens can hardly be found, and when one does, the price is in the $600(US)
range.

A very sharp m50/1.4 and the 85/1.8 are my best performing pentax lenses.

Have fun
