I had a brain fart when I wrote "incident spot metering." I should have written "reflective spot metering". Let me try again:

I don't think you can meter the reflected light on one side of a transluscent subject and use that to determine your exposure for the backlit side of the subject.

I would put the camera in spot metering mode and meter the brightest part of a white subject on the shooting side then expose 1 1/2 to 2 stops above medium tone. That should give you a negative with the proper density. There's no guarantee that the lab will print it right.
