1.  Meter your gray card.
2. Meter the brightest area where you want detail.
3. Meter the darket area where you want detail.

=========================================

D.....G.....B

If the difference is the same on both sides
expose per the gray card metering.

=========================================

D...G.......B

If the difference is less on the dark side
(if it's a dim scene) close down 1/2
of the difference. This will let you get the
highlight detail that would otherwise be lost
because of the great exposure difference.

=========================================

D.......G...B

If the difference is less on the bright side
(if it's a bright scene) open up 1/2
of the difference. This will let you get the
shadow detail that would otherwise be lost
because of the great exposure difference.

=========================================

"Difference" is how far off-center the gray
meter measurement is. You'll want to effective
move it toward center without disturbing the
overall exposure too much.

Feel free to bracket just to prove it to yourself.
This is how all the fuss about the Zone system boils down.
