Shel, all AF is most definitely *not* the same, oh boy.

I fundamentally agree with your thoughts above. But two things which may
or may not interest you.

1. I have my camera set up so that if I half press the shutter, the AF
operates. If I decide (while I'm composing) that I don't want AF, my
thumb (which is already resting on another button around the back of the
camera) presses and holds down a button that disables the AF and I'm then
fully manual focus. It can be set the other way around if necessary
(manual focussing with the thumb switching in AF).

2. My friend has an *ist Ds and the focus is nice - about the same as my
old D60. Both are nowhere near the AF ability of top-line SLRs from other
makes, both digital and film. If Pentax is going to ever release the LX-
D, auto-focus is going to have to be several rungs up the ladder....
