Conversely, there is no experience quite like looking at a negative under the enlarger to see data that never made it to the print! Back in my wet darkroom days, I used to love the negatives more than the prints!

That's a good way to check the job your printer is doing... but it's hard on the back to be bent over, looking up into the enlarger lens for negative detail... <g> I had to keep reminding myself I was doing that to determine precise focus, not to be enjoying it more than the final prints!
