It doesn't bother me one whit, for a couple of reasons. For one thing it's usally attached to a *ist-D complete with battery grip & 8 NiMH rechargeable cells - no lightweight with no lens. Then there's the fact that the alternative is the FA* 80-200/f2.8 - compared to that almost anything seems light as a feather.
