I'm not really sure why it happened. I haven't taken it apart to see
the actual cause of failure. My initial thought was because I was
using it on a beach on a damp day a couple of days earlier, but I'm
don't know if that was the cause or not. It was quite a suprise to me
as this lens is built like a tank - it was the last one I expected to
fail.

The failure mode was that the zoom ring has effectively broken from
inside. That is to say that the zoom ring will freely spin around the
body of the lens. I was able to use it to for a while manually
performing the zoom by stretching the lens, but the focus seems to
have locked up on something. You can hear something rattling around
inside (loose screw?).

I do remember someone sent out a link showing a dissassembled F70-210.
If I can find it, I may end up taking it apart to see if I can do
something with it.
