Hmmm ... just a thought, although it would probably never happen - perhaps
Nikon, Pentax, Konica-Minolta can put together a consortium and start
making their own chips.  Auto companies often share technology and
sometimes work together to produce product, so why not these camera
companies?  It would certainly help them to remain competitive, even if
making FF chips wasn't their main focus.  Being totally dependent on
outside suppliers for a main and very important component doesn't seem like
a good long-term business strategy in any case.
