Channel Mixer is NOT the right tool.  It is just one of many tools and
techniques used to make B&W conversions.  One technique that's highly
recommended is the Double Hue Saturation technique, and Juan has posted a
nice tutorial here as well.  But again, these are just a few of the many
possibilities.

What's paramount, IMO, is understanding B&W.  I've seen a lot of tutorials
on B&W conversions, and the best results often come from those who are
familiar with B&W work, having used their own darkrooms or worked a fair
amount with film.
