That red thing is a rare manufacturing defect in many digital cameras. If your camera arrives with that red thing on it, send it back immediately. Many unfortunate users of such defective cameras have reported negative side-effects such as hand cramps, sudden hot flashes, hemorrhoids, lack of a decent sex life, fallen arches, death, and mild narcolepsy.

Once again, if your new camera arrives with that red thing on it, send it back to your supplier for a replacement. If they send you another camera with that red thing on it, just keep sending it back until they send you a non-defective unit. That red thing tends to reproduce quickly, and can spread like wildfire to other cameras if not properly contained.

So yeah, watch out for it.
