because Pentax users and non-Pentax users alike couldn't figure out why they
should buy an Z-1 instead of a Canon or Minolta (or a Nikon for that
matter). Back then, few had invested heavily into Pentax AF lenses and if
you wanted AF, even if you were a Pentax user, you could just as well invest
into EOS or something and this is exactly what many did. At the time Pentax
decided to reduce the price on the Z-1p, the camera was seen as behind the
pack.

The PZ-1p was a victim of a marketing/sales/perception failure for sure.
Not judging on those terms, I still find it to be wildly cool and a super
camera.

To tell you the truth though, it was the combo of price/performance that
made me get one in 1998. That was after I was very close to getting an N90
(still P.O.'d that Nikon can't seem to offer a built-in flash on their top
models - a serious inconvenience when wanting to use a flash occasionally
IMO - and it drives the price steeply up to buy a speedlight flash).

To tell you an even bigger truth, the thing I like most about Pentax is this
list and the PUG.
