If the initial settings screen is coming up, that means the camera has not yet been initialized with date and time information.

When you go through the format sequence I articulated in a prior post, when you elect the final Format and OK button, the camera says "formatting" and the IO light is lit for a few seconds.

Try taking the batteries out for a while, like 20 minutes. While they're out, turn the camera on and press the shutter release, to try to consume the last power in the storage capacitor. Replace the batteries, switch on, see if it will accept a date/time input and the OK button input.

If it doesn't, I'd wager that the OK button contacts are defective and you have to exchange the body for another one.

format command in the Menu system, and selecting format, the message
doesn't bounce back to the "no card in camera" screen display.

When you press the OK button to format the card, what happens on the
screen. Do you get a message that says "formatting" or some such sign of
activity?

I'm going to visit with John Celio in a bit, swap out cards, and see what
we can find out before I decide to give up and return the camera.

Hmm. I took my card out, turned on the camera. It says "no card in
camera" on the LCD. I went to the format command in the Menu system,
selected "format", and it bounced right back to the "no card in
camera" screen display. Is that not what yours does?
